Headmaster's Welcome Message

Wholeheartedly we welcome you to our Savio College web site which we hope can give you an insight into our Salesian family, so vibrantly active within our educative community.

Education here is a matter of the heart and it is firmly established on the solid foundations of the Salesian preventive system. This is the educative cornerstone of our College, and it aims at tapping into the myriad of skills and talents our students possess. Ultimately we hope to help them to become good Christians and honest citizens through reason, religion and loving kindness.

Like the farmers who tirelessly till and plough the fields that embrace our College, we too daily plough the hearts and minds of the young and therein sow seeds of great promise that will be harvested in due time.
Do you care to join us and catch the Salesian Spirit? Then come along! We look forward to having you with us and to sharing with you our rich Salesian Spirit.

Fr. Sandro. Camilleri s.d.b.
Headmaster

Mission Statement

Savio College is a Catholic school founded on the educational philosophy of St. John Bosco. The three main principles of this philosophy are Religion, Reason and Loving Kindness. At Savio College the student is central to a holistic education embracing the spiritual, academic, artistic and sporting domains. In a environment based on family spirit, the educative community nurtures the student in developing into "a good Christian and an honest citizen".

Foundation & History

Savio College arose among the green fertile fields of Dingli in 1965 when its first stone was officially and ceremoniously blessed by H.E. Mons. Michael Gonzi on the 20th June. Three years later, in October 1968 the brand new College finally opened wide its doors to the first batch of students made up merely of twelve students.

Indeed a very small and humble beginning to what Savio College, by the grace of God and Our Lady’s blessing, has matured to today where 260 students are daily greeted, supported and guided to develop holistically in all spheres of their life, to which we give equal importance.

Salesians of Don Bosco

The Salesians of Don Bosco are a relatively young religious order founded by St. John Bosco in Turin Italy in 1868. Our primary focus is the education of the young through the preventive system Don Bosco imparted to us, a system based on reason, religion and loving kindness.

To do this mission, spread around the four corners of the globe, we have schools, youth clubs, retreat centres, parishes, universities and various mission fields where our many missionaries take this charism deep in the heart of  these territories. There are around 17, 000 Salesians around the world, 18, 000 Salesian Sisters and lots more lay cooperators who help us in our educative mission wherever we are.

St. John Bosco

St. John Bosco, or Don Bosco, as he is affectionately known by all the Salesian Family around the world, was born in Becchi, in the outskirts of Turin on the 16th August 1815. His mother Mamma Margaret and his father Francesco were very loving, hardworking peasant parents who used to work in the fields surrounding his little family home. At almost two years of age, little Johnny Bosco, his brother Joseph and his step brother Anthony lost their beloved dad to pneumonia. Courageously, with great stamina and total trust in God, Mamma Margaret brought up her three boys on her own. As a matter of fact, the education Johnny’s mother gave him, left an indelible mark not only on him, but also on the whole Salesian Society which is strongly family oriented. Against all odds, John Bosco, was ordained priest on the 5th June 1841 and on the 8th December 1841, after meeting the street urchin Bartholomew Garelli in the sacristy of the church of St. Francis of Assisi Turin just before mass, the salesian work began with a mere recitation of the Hail Mary. In the days that followed, hundreds of boys thronged around Don Bosco till finally they settled in Valdocco, in the Pinardi shed, where the first Salesian youth club was officially established and inaugurated.

Don Bosco, tirelessly gave his life for his boys, whom he loved as a father. He died at 72 years of age on the 31st January 1888 and was canonized on the 1st April 1934.

St. Dominic Savio

Domenico Savio was born at San Giovanni di Riva on the 2nd April 1842 to a poor peasant family. He went to Don Bosco’s salesian oratory in Turin at about 12 years of age and was mesmerized at Don Bosco’s motto, Da Mihi Animas Caetera Tolle – Give me souls and take away the rest.

He was a lively young person, sure of himself and and in a very close relationship with Jesus. He was a born leader well sought after by his companions and dearly loved by all boys for his open proclamation of his faith in all that he did at the youth club. Domenic wanted to become a priest but died at 15 years of age in Mondonio, Turin in the odour of sanctity on the 5th March 1857.

He was canonized as the first teenage saint who was not a martyr, on the 12th June 1854. He is acknowledged as the epitome of the Salesian Preventive System of education. Our College proudly bears him as our patron saint.
